An EV that ran out of charge short of the I-20 East chargers
Service Stories are representative scenarios based on the types of roadside calls we handle in Metro Atlanta. They are written to explain how a call works. They are not customer testimonials or reviews, and they do not describe identifiable customers.
The situation
A commuter heading east out of Atlanta watches the estimated range drop faster than expected in stop-and-go traffic, then turns off the interstate with single-digit miles remaining. The nearest fast charger is occupied and the vehicle will not make the next one.
The car is drivable, undamaged and parked in a retail lot — it simply has no energy in the pack.
What actually mattered
- The exact parking spot: which shopping center, which storefront, which row.
- Whether the vehicle could be positioned so charging equipment could reach the charge port safely.
- How much charge the driver actually needed — enough to reach a charger, not a full pack.
How the call went
- The driver shared their location from the phone so the technician had coordinates instead of a vague cross street.
- The technician confirmed the vehicle, connector and charge-port location by phone before leaving.
- Charge was added on site until the vehicle had enough range to reach a charging station under its own power, and the driver drove away rather than being towed.
The takeaway
A depleted EV is often an energy problem, not a tow problem. The deciding factors are access, vehicle condition and how far the nearest working charger is.
