What Happens When an EV Dies in Traffic? Mobile Charging Explained

Published by Trustee Roadside Assistance

Short answer

If your EV is about to run out in traffic, get to the safest spot you can while it still moves, turn on hazards and call 911 if you are in a dangerous lane. Then call for mobile charging, which can add enough energy to reach a charger if the car is otherwise healthy.

Why traffic drains range

  • Long delays with climate control running
  • Unexpected detours that add distance
  • Leaving without enough charge for the real route

Safety first

Use remaining range to reach a shoulder, exit or lot rather than stopping in a travel lane. If you are stopped somewhere dangerous, call 911 first. Stay out of traffic.

How a mobile charging call works

  • Call 478-202-3221 with your location and battery state; share GPS location if you choose
  • Compatibility and connector are confirmed
  • A technician comes to the vehicle when it is safe to work there
  • The car receives an emergency top-up — enough to reach a charger, not a full charge

Limits

Trustee provides mobile Level 2 AC charging for Tesla and many compatible EVs. It is not DC fast charging, and how much range a session adds depends on the vehicle, the time available and conditions — so compatibility and connector type are confirmed by phone before dispatch.

A jumpstart does not charge an empty traction battery. Some highway locations may not be safe to work on until the vehicle is moved.
