Mobile EV Charging: How Roadside Assistance Is Changing for EV Drivers

Published by Trustee Roadside Assistance

Short answer

Traditional roadside help assumed towing for most problems. When an EV is simply out of charge, mobile charging can bring energy to the vehicle so it can drive to a charger — though it is a slower AC top-up, not a full recharge, and it cannot fix a vehicle fault.

From tow-first to charge-first

For gas vehicles, the default roadside answer was fuel or a tow. An EV that runs out of charge is often mechanically fine — the problem is energy, not the car. That makes on-site charging a sensible first question.

What mobile EV charging actually is

A technician brings charging equipment to the vehicle and adds enough energy for the driver to reach a nearby charging station or destination. It is an emergency top-up, not a replacement for regular charging.

Trustee provides mobile Level 2 AC charging for Tesla and many compatible EVs. It is not DC fast charging, and how much range a session adds depends on the vehicle, the time available and conditions — so compatibility and connector type are confirmed by phone before dispatch.

When it is not the right answer

  • The car will not wake or open its charge port
  • There is a warning or fault that prevents charging
  • The location cannot be safely or legally accessed
  • The connector is not compatible with the equipment

A backup plan, not a guarantee

Knowing mobile charging exists can make an unexpected low battery less stressful, but it does not replace route planning. Arrival times depend on technician location, traffic and call volume.
