Flat Tire in Atlanta: Spare Tire vs Tow

Published by Trustee Roadside Assistance

Short answer

A flat tire can be handled at the roadside when the vehicle carries a usable spare, the wheel lock key is available, the wheel and studs are undamaged, and the vehicle is parked somewhere safe to lift. If any of those are missing, the vehicle likely needs transport to a tire shop.

Four things decide it

  • Is there a usable spare? Many newer vehicles ship with a sealant kit instead.
  • Is the wheel lock key present? Without it, locking lug nuts usually cannot come off safely.
  • Is the damage limited to the tire? A bent or cracked wheel changes the answer.
  • Is the vehicle somewhere it can be lifted safely — level, stable ground with working room?

Where the vehicle is parked matters more than people expect

A car on a level parking lot in Decatur is a straightforward job. The same car on a soft grass shoulder on a curve, or in a live lane on I-285, is not. Jacking a vehicle requires stable ground and space to work outside traffic.

If you can still move the car safely at low speed to a nearby lot, that often turns a marginal call into an easy one. If you cannot, stay in the vehicle with hazards on and tell the dispatcher exactly where you are.

After the spare goes on

A compact spare is temporary. Manufacturers typically limit both speed and distance, and it is not designed for a long commute. Get the original tire repaired or replaced promptly.
