Emergency EV Charging on Highways: What Drivers Need to Know
Published by Trustee Roadside Assistance
Short answer
If your EV is running low on a highway, exit or reach the safest possible stopping point while it still moves. Call 911 if you are stopped in a dangerous spot. Mobile charging can add enough energy to reach a charger once the car is somewhere safe to work.
Why highways are harder
- Higher speeds use more energy
- Chargers may be far apart
- Traffic jams, crashes and detours push the battery lower than planned
Before it runs out
- Slow down — it can noticeably extend range
- Reduce heating or cooling
- Head for the nearest exit, lot or shoulder rather than stopping in a lane
How emergency charging works
A technician comes to the vehicle and provides enough energy to reach a nearby charger. It is an emergency top-up, not a full recharge.
Trustee provides mobile Level 2 AC charging for Tesla and many compatible EVs. It is not DC fast charging, and how much range a session adds depends on the vehicle, the time available and conditions — so compatibility and connector type are confirmed by phone before dispatch.
Some highway shoulders are not safe places to work. The technician may need the car in a safer spot first.
